Dolly Thompsett was born in London, where she continues to live and work.

"I am interested in certain visual expressions that I see re-occuring in many types of mass media imagery such as video games and science fiction movies. They're also in news footage. These expressions are a powerful visual form of rhetoric which makes the ordinary seem sensational yet they hide their persuasive means."

Dolly is showing four new paintings in 'Fantastic!': Afghanistan (2003), Bethlehem (2003), Poppy Field (2003) and Palestine (2003). Each painting is sourced from news or documentary images. Aspects of these news images echo the emotionally compelling 'iconography' of religious and visionary painting. These correspondences (such as a beam of searchlight / heavenly light to take an obvious example) she emphasises in her paintings using modern synthetic materials. In so doing she makes manifest the current employment of a visual means of persuasion that has been used for hundreds of years, and for altogether different purposes.

Dolly completed an MA in Fine art at Byam Shaw in 2001. She is currently studying for an Mphil in Fine Art at Goldsmiths.
